My latest #livePLUS Facebook livestream dealt with the question of revenge and was inspired by one of my dear friends’ personal struggle of a recent breakup. What happens to your self-esteem when someone hurts you and does it really make any sense to go after that person? Is revenge really that sweet? Here are a few of my thoughts on the topic.
We have all been there: a cheating man, a betraying friend, a backstabbing colleague or a mean-will family member. They hurt us which creates anger and all we want is to repay. As they can’t get away with this..At least they should feel part of this pain, right? But truly, what are you hoping for? As the real release, let’s call it forgiveness, doesn’t mean you forget. It simply means you let go of your rage to cause pain for another human being.
Confucius said it wisely: „Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”
Truthbomb it is since on the long run, revenge is harmful for you by bringing your worst side to the surface. Of course it is hard to sit back and watch as the other person live their lives happily but karma never forgets. You need to focus on your own happiness and it is almost impossible if you are obsessed with the others’ lives. Don’t let them rule your inner peace!
Awareness is crucial here too because then you understand: only hurt people hurt. Look at your colleague who steals your ideas differently: the struggle they go through to build their self-esteem by searching values outside and not believing in themselves enough. Or look at your mother-in-law’s controlling actions differently: she may be afraid of aging and losing her family. With compassion these stories look slightly different, right?
And why not to seek revenge?
- because you won’t feel better afterwards, guaranteed
- actually you will feel worse by hurting someone important to you
- useless to try controlling someone else’s life
- total waste of time
- hurting someone will not delete your pain
Hope you found some thoughts to think about this week as well and can’t wait to see you next week for the weekly broadcast which will be on Monday.
