Nicola Griffin, the silver haired golden girl
Nicola Griffin is a mother of two lovely twins. She is a very well organized lady and did that as a profession when she helped French students visitng the UK for language trips. She has shining silver hair mixed with some natural darker undertone no hairdresser could create. She has raised her daughters as a single mom whose priority has always been to provide for her twins. However she ruled the headlines for something else: as a fifty-something years old model she was the first of her age being featured in the yearly swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated earlier this year, rocking that golden bikini alongside with bombshells Ashley Graham and Philomena Kwao. I got the honour to conduct not only one but two interviews with her and by sharing her inmost thoughts she became a Beauty with Plus.
Susie: We know your name from that famous Sports Illustrated ad but when you don’t pose in golden bikinis, what do you do for a living?
Nicky: Since last year modelling is my main job but for years I have been a student organizer, helping French kids coming to the UK and manage their trips from accommodation till programs. My life has changed 3 years ago when I was scouted by a model agent to do a shampoo ad, followed by the amazing Swimsuitsforall campaign so last September I decided to leave my job and dedicate my full time to modeling. And I love every bit of it! I’m so grateful to my lovely agent, Anna Shilinglaw and Milk Management!
S.: If you have to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
S.: Have you ever had challenges accepting your body?
Nicky: I am quite tall, 5’10 to be precise. When I was a teenager it really bothered me to be the tallest and I remember that at 13 years old at the school dance I had to sit down for my first kiss not to be taller than the boy (she laughs). I struggled through my teenage years but in my twenties I learned to actually appreciate and love my height. Earlier this year at the Sports Illustrated party I was wearing incredibly high heels yet I had to look up to Victoria’s Secret models standing next to them so I just smiled while remembering those early years when I hated my height.
S.: That’s fantastic how you turned your disadvantage into something beautiful! But we all have bad days, what is your secret to boost your self-confidence?
Nicky: Oh we all do! I discovered zumba and I do love it! It makes me feel so good about myself! Beside the physical self-care, I often get inspiration from various sources, recently I came across and inspiring video from Oprah which taught me to look at failures as detours. Life just sends you into a different direction, that’s all!
S.: When was the last time you felt truly beautiful, inside and out?
Nicky: I went on a date not so long ago with an ex-boyfriend and this alone is an exceptional activity. Being a single mom I never let my girls alone for 20 years since I was always lack of time or finances. But now the time came and one of my daughters, Elly helped me to get ready. She did my makeup, helped me while I got dressed and held my hand till we walked into the restaurant. She told me the biggest compliment ever by saying „Hope I will look just like you when I am at your age!” I absolutely felt gorgeous and that was just a perfect night!
S.: Please, finish the sentence: If I was 16 years old again, I would tell myself…
Nicky:..to believe in myself and have the confidence and vision that I can do anything. Whatever I set my heart on, it is possible!
S.: What is that certain PLUS that makes a woman beautiful?
Nicky: Absolutely the humour! It can reveal so much beauty in everyone! I remember a blind date when first I rejected the guy yet I agreed to sit down for a meal with him. By the end of the courses I had the greatest belly laughs and noticed how beautiful his blue eyes were and how handsome he was. Beside humour, I would also add kindness to name the PLUS that makes people beautiful!
She is definitely a fun person as we laughed so much during the call (as you could see that on the FaceTime picture I shared on my Facebook page, check it HERE). Everything seemed so natural while talking about her kids whom she adores so deeply and we really had a good time. Her views on fashion diversity are on point and she definitely is a pioneer to make silver ladies feel better in their skin. I loved how she described her wobbly belly as a reminder she gave birth to twins and by the stretchmarks she is reminded every single day how lucky she is. I am truly honoured to meet this wonderful lady and can’t wait where her career will take this adorable woman. Her devotion to her family reminded me of my own mom and she truly got me emotional through the interview. Witty, fun, intelligent and did I mention how beautiful she looked with her gorgeous hair up in a messy bun? Truly beautiful she is, inside and out. A Beauty with PLUS!
