It’s been nearly 3 weeks since the relaunch of my website and I can welcome you all on the brand new surface. I decided to share a few behind the scenes secret about the preparation of the last couple of weeks.
I believe everyone needs a bit of rebirth from time to time when readjusting goals and setting new ones. I have done a long way since I started blogging nearly 4 years ago as cupcake&pearls and I have been through gradual improvement not only as for the design but for the content too. As a freelance marketing expert, it is part of my job to help companies creating branding and visual elements but as it is with most professionals, I never have the time to work on my own. I have been wanting a consistent design for a long time and this summer I made the decision: fall would bring that change!
How naive I was to believe that all would get ready by September when I asked my web design guru, Dani to create a brand new site. It quickly became obvious that I so underestimated the amount of work. I needed not only a new website with more user friendly navigation but new graphics too and I wanted it to be professional (so far I did my own graphics and clearly I am not a graphic designer). Thanks to Periscope (and my sweet friend, Melo) I met the talented illustrator and designer from the US, Vivayne who offered kindly to help me putting my vision into graphical appearance. Speaking different languages and even time zone differences (she lives on the west coast, 9 hours apart) could not stop us from our long Skype conversations, usually in the middle of my night, however time made the workflow slower. If Dani asked for a new graphic element at 2pm and though I emailed Vivayne immediately, we had to wait till my morning (her night) to get things moving, losing another day.
I was completely swept off of my feet by the level of professionalism from this talented artist with whom we “just” talked for weeks about what beautywithplus means to me, what is my message, my vision and mission, what feelings I would like to evoke when visitors arrive to my page. And Vivayne was listening and started drawing doodles, sketches and plans. First we had to select the appropriate colours based on my vision for the brand.
Indigo: confidence, trust, soul searching, enchanting, intuitive, respectful
Leander: spiritual, curative, protective, peace of mind
Soft blue/turquoise: amazement, healing, calm, optimistic
White: curative, pure thoughts
Pink: encouraged, loved, feminine, friendly
Warm grey: friendly, safe
Yellow: joy, uplifted, happy, optimistic
After defining the main colours, the hard part came: creating the logo. I spent days to think over which of the 3 directions would be the right one and I involved friends who know me to help out then finally decided to go with the heart closed inside the eye symbol. It expresses perfectly what my core message is: look at others and yourself with love! I worked on to create the new navigation system, categories, tabs while Vivayne had been busy making all hand drawn elements. I was in complete awe how talented this mom of three is and fell in love immediately with the playful doodles. My initial doubts of going too much into the “childish” direction disappeared quickly as my experience convinced me: a playful touch needs to be added to my message which otherwise would be too heave to digest.
I worked weeks on writing new articles, category descriptions, extra texts and all in 2 languages of course. Copying manually my existing content is a killing job and I am still working on it but I didn’t want to wait anymore so the doors of your new virtual home opened on 6th December and to my biggest happiness your feedback is so overwhelmingly positive!
I’m forever grateful to Dani for his patience (working with two creative perfectionist women must have been a real challenge for him!) and to Vivayne for capturing and expressing perfectly what beautywithplus means to me. Thank you so much!
