Beside the positive attitude which I explained in my previous chapter (read HERE ) I noticed another typical Sicilian thing: they are really resourceful! Their innovative, problem-solving nature probably comes from their positive attitude and they always find the right solution for every problem, including a 30 kg (66 pounds) luggage’s transfer from Milan.
Before travelling to Sicily, I had a slight panick attack: I was standing in the middle of our bedroom, surrounded by all the clothes, accessories, shoes etc necessary for the photoshootings and they filled 2 big luggage. Our airplane company (which I was not so familiar with) allows 20 kg maximum and we booked only 1 baggage so I started to wonder how we would fit all. One of my new mamma (Federica’s biological mom) immediately gave the solution via a phone call with her daughter: package delivery. As I heard the words I began to wonder how pricy it would get to send a big baggage with some courrier but it came out that they referred to a different transfer system. In Sicily since they live in the southest point of the country, many small companies specialized in baggage transfer as they work with trucks who run all around Italy. Not to mention that after my big pink luggage landed at one of Federica’s uncle who happens to live near us, it went to the back of a truck and arrived safely to Sicily for half of the price what the airplane company wanted to charge me. Because Sicilian do really have solution for all!
While having long conversations with my new Sicilian family I also learned about the prejudice what other Italians have when it comes to these southern people. According to other Italians, Sicilians are lazy, they do not work and beside the maffia nothing really comes from the south. Let me tell you what I saw: one of Marco’s (my photographer’s) sister works from morning till evening in the family’s bakery, with only 1 day off every 14 days (!). Corrado, one of my new papa wakes up at 3 am every day to start his shift which he continues in the evening. My other papa, Roberto works 7 days a week without Christmas or Easter holiday. Despite all the hard work they never complain about tiredness or the hatred words for work never leave their mouth. They never cancel the weekly family reunion (I will dedicate a chapter for this!) because they are exhausted. Because they love to live and they know how to. And yes, they are completely different from the northern Italians whom I met so far but only in the best sense. First get to know them and then make an opinion. Because this is Sicily, this is the real dolce vita!
And here is the skirt, straight from Singapore which would not have arrived to Sicily if it had not been for Sicilian resourcefulness. Special design by the talented Jane Watson through the camera of Marco Di Giovanni:
