Simone Marulli interview: “Curvy is a philosophy”
Simone was one of the first representatives of the Italian plus size scene I met when I moved to Milan. His designs and his attitude immediately swept me off my feet and I wanted to create an interview with him to share his visions on designs, confidence and Italian women’s style.
Susie: Tell me about your beginnings!
Simone: Since I was a little child I have been always attracted to clothes, fashion and creating something unique. My first designs were born when I was only 5 years old (my drawings and designs were reflecting elegance in a Marie Antoinette style) and I pursued my dreams in the world of fashion: finished my fashion school studies first in Brescia at SILV then masters in London and opened my own design atelier in Milan.
Susie: And you are very international ever since you opened your showroom!
Simone: It is true – I create custom made designs not only for Italian customers but women around the globe: from Lebanon through the USA till Japan. I’m pleased to provide my contemporary and romantic creatures for women of all nationalities. They come from various countries but they all want to express their sensuality, elegance and confidence when choosing Simone Marulli designs.
Susie: It is quite rare that a designer for straight sizes also start a curvy line – where did this idea come from?
Simone: A good friend of mine called me one day to ask my help as she could not find a simple shirt in her size (IT 50) so I helped her out. Then I realized how limited the market is with elegant, sophisticated and unique designs for curvy women so as a first step I created a plus size mannequin, I studied curves to be able to create the right tailored pieces for sizes 46 and up! Being curvy is not just about the design but also about the soul: it is a philosophy!
Susie: I love your attitude towards plus size women! Please tell me more!
Simone: (laughing) I am a curvy man so I can associate with all the journey you need to go through! Self-acceptance is crucial and important – that will increase your self-confidence automatically! And then find your own feminine style! Do not get trapped in knitted or jersey dresses but be brave to express your personality in beautiful colours and various materials. You do not have to hide yourself but instead: embrace your curves and dress them nicely!
Susie: Tell us about your new collections, what inspired you when creating the designs?
Simone: The new SimoneMarulli collection (IT 38-54) was mainly inspired by freedom which women often forget. I imagined all the women, fed up with their daily duties at work and at home and visualized them in a more relaxing atmosphere, somewhere on an island, having a drink on the beach and surrounded by peace and freedom. Therefore the colours reflect all these soft shades of pastels :lime yellow, chlorophyll green, the turquoise of the sea are mixed with wisteria, the red and dust pink of flowers which appear in the forms of fabrics like jacquard, georgette and micro lace.My curvy collection (IT 46-58) is made for the woman who wants to feel and look sexy in pois prints, geometric sequins and embrace her curves in georgette, crepe and micro lace. Romantic necklines enhance the decolette and printed silk inlays create an exciting mix of fabrics.
Susie:I love how you implement all these colours not only to your ready-to-wear collections but to the bridal one, too!
Simone: Colours are important and they appear in my bridal pieces as well – I tried to create something particular for all types of bodies. I made polka dots on a flocked tulle base but there are dresses with macrame lace details for the classic bride as well. I kept the diversity also for the volumes: mermaid style or huge tull in princess style, you will find all in my collection.
Susie: Beside the designs and embracing the curves, what is the most beautiful feature in a woman?
Simone: For me the beauty of a woman is in her behaviour most importantly: she is polite, elegant and behave appropriate in every situation. She accepts herself and embrace who she is, never exaggerating neither in style nor in behaviour!
Susie: As you may know, I am engaged and wonder what type of dress would you visualize for me?
Simone: Marco is a brave guy (he laughs) and you are a confident and fun woman so I definitely would imagine you in a white georgette and silk dress, complemented with pink details to express your romantic side. But pictures are better than words so here is my design for you:
Susie: Wow, I am flattered, thank you so much for the design and also for the interview!
It was truly uplifting listening to Simone how rich his explanation went on when speaking of his inspirations, colours and patterns. He was describing every detail so delicately like a master chef when speaking of his creations. He is a true artist who takes your breath away with his personality because beside his talent, he is also a really nice person who will charm you with his continuous smile and gentleman behaviour. I am happy to know that there is an Italian designer who takes care about plus size women not only by his designs but understanding our philosophy, as he called it.
