American brand, Lane Bryant has recently launched its lingerie collection, promoted by 6 hot plus size models with the campaign called #ImNoAngel. They use the hashtag in the title as their purpose is to spread the message widely on social media where # is frequently used. Women are encouraged and asked to share their own photos and stories to spread boby diversity.
Models in the video draw our attention to the fact that sexy has no size label and the company created a webpage where pictures of women from social media are shared: HERE Their goal is to redefine beauty.
There is no question about the beauty of Candice or Elly, they all are perfect choices for this campaign and we all can be happy that another step (even though a trans-atlantic one) was made to promote curvy girls. But hold on for a second – why the word „angel” in the name? Not coincidental as it is kind of an answer to Victoria’s Secret brand’s angels, who represented „the perfect body” in their latest campaign (showing only skinny women), causing outrage in the plus size community. So here is the answer for that.
But are we truly happy? No doubt that Lane Bryant counts on the rage within us when they came up with this campaign idea. There is a bit of „well, lets show that we are not Victoria’s Secret angels but we are still hot and sexy!” message inside this campaign.
I completely love and support this part of the message. I find it crucial to show that there are so many types of beautiful and sexy does not depend on your size. However if this was the main goal then the models should reflect this and all sizes shall be in this ad. From 34-54 EU sizes. For example.
Another question rises: do we really need this „ding-dong fight”? I have rage within but I try to give it out in a contructive, „teaching” way and teach the society how my EU size 48 can be sexy too. I don’t want to be an angel and clearly I am not (at least in VS terms) but that is totally OK!
I have double feelings when I watch the video. Somehow I feel that some companies, activists and bloggers (if the cap fits) going into extremities make the gap only bigger. We need campaigns which call attention but we also need to respect the „other side”. The angels of Victoria’s Secret are just as hot and sexy as these plus size models. Beside one another, not against each other. At least this is how I see it. And you? What are your thoughts?
